you can call the company who you bought the iphone from and tell them you are traveling out of the country and you are gonna use their service there and you want your phone unlock. They will try and talk you out of it but don't give in. Tell them you need your phone unlock.

BestBuy won't let you buy without contract :( TurboSIM should work just fine with T-Mobile.

I was just thinking of buying the phone at best buy, can't I buy it from there without an AT&T contract? Also if I buy that Turbo SIM I'm guessing this works with T-mobile right?

Jakkelyne : The only possible way right now is a Turbo SIM which you can buy for $20 on eBay. Slightly tricky but not impossible :) Surprise him this birthday!

p.s : You can either buy an iPhone on eBay (no contract) or Apple store (2yr contract while buying)... Check your options...

Zafar : It doesn't hurt to update apps on Cydia. You can even use iTunes to update to 2.0.2 firmware and still unlock your iPhone afterwards!
