iPhone 1.1.4 Upgrade, Downgrade, Activate, Jailbreak, Unlock Horror Story!
Once iNdependence v 1.4b5 was released with 1.1.4 support, I went ahead and updated the iPhone (16GB 1.1.3 OTB unlocked using iJailbreak)from 1.1.2 to 1.1.4 via iTunes which gave me an error. I repeated the same and the update went fine and now I have version 1.1.4 installed on the iPhone.
I then fired iNdependence trying to jailbreak/activate my iPhone. I hit the Activate button and it didn’t respond in a timely fashion showing me the Jailbreak screen. I then hit the Jailbreak tab to Jailbreak the iPhone which gave me positive results. I now proceeded by clicking on the activate button and it sorta activated the iPhone but I saw no signal. It being unlocked previously in an IPSF manner using iJailbreak, I never realized that I had to use signal.app to get a signal on 1.1.4 . I took an extreme step and hit the unlock button at this stage which promptly alerted me saying I need not unlock the iPhone if I used IPSF – I ignored it! It gave an error message saying the unlock failed.
The horror story begins now – I see the famous – no WiFi, no Bluetooth, no IMEI, no modem firmware on the newly updated 16GB 1.1.4 iPhone.
It was a little scary at this time. I almost lost faith in my iPhone troubleshooting skills! I then tried something interesting – downgrade to 1.1.3 using iTunes. All I did is hold the ‘opt’ key and hit the restore button – browsed the 1.1.3 Restore firmware file and boom, the restore was underway! MAGIC!! I did not put the iPhone in DFU mode , it started downgrading to 1.1.3 and finally it finished with the downgrade!
I then used iJailbreak as usual and took a bold decision yet again – i.e to unlock and jailbreak the 1.1.3 iPhone and hey, it worked a charm this time around! Not to mention that WiFi, Bluetooth, IMEI back to where they belong!! The iPhone is wiped clean, the entire 14.6 GB is showing ‘Free’. It is working great now! I just restored to a 1.1.2 backup from iTunes. Yeah, weird tries but I am a happy man at the end of the day. I don’t have to fake to Apple saying my 20 day old 16GB iPhone died all of a sudden 
Verdict : Don’t use iNdependence and don’t upgrade to 1.1.4 yet. Trust me, you will save a ‘heart attack’ in the process!!

you had to close itunes and ituneshelper before you unlock using independence…… even i got repair needed
i just closed itunes and itunes helper and independence…restarted phone and started independence and unlocked….and bingo…im on 1.1.4 on T mobile…. only problem is my applications are not showing on spring board even though they are in installer…

@ kk : Yeah, I never closed ituneshelper. My real problem was that my iPhone was already unlocked (1.1.3 OTB – IPSF Style). Do you think that might have helped??

had the same problem after using 16 gig and using independence BUT instead of downgrading …i upgraded to 1.1.4 again to get my phone and wifi again and then tried the SimUnlock again but same thing happen again ..”Repair needed error” so i gave it a third shot with updating the phone again and getting wifi and phone back and hence tried the unlock again and it worked eventhough it said at the end that it failed.
Hi Billy! So you updated your iPhone to 1.1.4 twice to get it back to work? Cool, I should have tried that but I am sorta happy with 1.1.3. After installing Dock on 1.1.3, coverflow stopped working (contacts, iPod), a restart fixed it though.
But, do you get to see the apps on your homescreen in 1.1.4?
Hello. I have exactly the same horror story. But mine is not a happy ending. I still can’t make the iPhone unlock to any SIM. It doesn’t work on ATT or T-Mobile. No signal. How did you do it? I am pc user, so I can’t use iJailbreak. Thanks.
Martin, I recommend you to downgrade to 1.1.3 as described and then use ziphone GUI to unlock your iphone

Hi Ivan. Any specific reason why you want only 1.1.1?? I suggest 1.1.3/1.1.2… For 1.1.3 just hold opt (mac)/ shift (windows) key and browse to the firmware file (I tried with 1.1.3) and hit restore in iTunes

@ Rob : All I did was hold the Opt key (Mac) / Shift (Windows) and clicked on restore button iTunes and restored it to 1.1.3 … Did not put the iPhone in DFU mode at all. So, don’t hold the home button/ power buttons like before..

Now I have a 1.1.4 jailbroken, activated and unlocked.

@ SpooN : Error is quite common, error 1015 actually means that 1.1.3 is restored and it is waiting for iNdependence to boot the iPhone to HomeScreen. Once homescreen shows, just launch iJailbreak to unlock the iPhone
@ iw : It ran fullway!! iNdependence will kick it out of the 1015 error (DFU) mode

iNdependence work for iTunes 7.6.1, I tried it today. It can be used to kick out of the 1015 error message while downgrading to 1.1.3 from 1.1.4. I suggest iJailbreak or ZiPhone for unlocking though

@ Myphone : Error 1015 is pretty common and it is very friendly
Once you get the famous error 1015, quit iTunes and launch iNdependence, it should kick the hell out of the error message and show you the home screen. Im sorry you had to try so many times to get around, iNdependence should fix it in about 5 seconds at most!

On a side note:: Zipod is the best program to use for unlocking your ipod to get more stuff on it. Believe me, i have tried tonnes!!

Oops, I believe you are on Windows then. I suggest you use iBrickr to kick it out of the DFU mode (1015).

Yep, you can put in your own sim (T-Mobile or non-ATT sim) for the whole process!

Well, if you are on Windows, then you should hold the Shift key and Option key on a Mac.
iNdependence is also only for a Mac.

I had an 1.1.2 iPhone working perfectly on non aT&T networks with a chip inserted on top of the SIM. I installed some new application and the iPhone crashed. I had to restore it with iTunes so I automatically got the 1.1.4.
How can I now downgrade to 1.1.3 if iTunes only shows me the Activate iPhone screen??
Oana : I suggest you use ZiPhoneGUI to put the iPhone in DFU mode and then you can restore it to 1.1.3 via iTunes

kiran:independence keeps crashing! i downgraded 1.1.4 to 1.1.3 and got the famous error. then the screen on the phone had the “connect to itunes” icon on it. i open independence and it crashes. side note: when the phone isn’t connected to the computer it doesn’t crash, but as soon as i connect it, crash! any thoughts?

I was wondering what is the difference between a DFU mode vs. a recovery mode and when do you use them. I am planning to get an iphone within the next week and was wondering what I need to do to jailbreak/activate/unlock becuase i have tmobile?
Hey David, trust me it is soo easy! I would suggest iPlus v1.2 though (check my newer posts) … Don’t worry about DFU and Recovery mode, they both mean the same. Putting your iPhone in DFU mode allows you to restore it to factory settings.
It is a one step unlock, so don’t worry!

Yep, it is for 1.1.4 iPhones, you can restore any version iPhone to 1.1.4 and proceed with iPlus…
You may get a 1.1.4 OTB if you bought one now… You can guess the firmware by seeing at the 4th and 5th numbers of iPhone’s serial #… Don’t worry about the firmware, everything is unlockable right now!!
Ok cool I will most certainly unlock with iPlus, but iPlus doesn’t seem to have a GUI like Ziphone. do you know if its currently in the works? Another thing is the what is the diff between a baseband and boatloader?

iPlus command line is an absolute nobrainer, just drag and drop some stuff on to the command prompt and that’s it, anyways a gui should surface soon….
baseband is vital for the phone to boot and it remains the same forever!
Baseband is related to the communication part(gsm radio), it can be upgraded for stability purposes…..
@ Ket : I suggest using iPlus if you need 1.1.4… I will do a step by step guide soon, it is so easy, restore to 1.1.4 and the run iPlus – can’t get any easier!!

Well, all I can suggest is to use fake edge settings for your carrier. Services used to be the best way but yeah, don’t input your edge settings, lemme know if it works

so first of all 1.1.4 is amazing it fixed a lot of problems on my phone
to upgrade do a full restore to 1.1.4 through iTunes
then download ziphone 2.5 (ziphone.org)
after your iPhone is fully restored to 1.1.4
run ziphone.
Have it unlock and jailbrake
after this you should be unlocked (if uupgraded using the dev teams method through installer, you will need to select new phone in iTunes
tell if this works it worked for me
oh make sure that u place ur sim in AFTER. Unlocking using ziphone

it works better with the at&t chip but it can be done with a non at&t sim

all u out there who want not have to pay for edge just turn it off by going into settings>general>network>edge and type in your name to all of the fields click save and it will save

hmmm …. i’ve updated my iphone to 1.1.4 firmware ….and now bluetooth seems undescoverable….apart from the fact that …i’m not able to install most of the applications in the installer …..HELP !!!!

Well, no more ZiPhone for me until Zibri uses fake bootloader instead of a force downgrade in an unsafe manner. I go with iPlus, the best! Don’t restore or go back to 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 if you use iPlus though…

As far as my experience goes with ZiPhone and iPlus : I will stick with iPlus cos’ we can revert back completely to factory settings whenever we want which ain’t possible with ZiPhone. iPlus is a no-nonsense software!

Well, even I used ZiPhone, it is not that it doesn’t work but it is that the problem is with the bootloader downgrading. I am not sure if you have heard about the tiff between Zibri and the Dev team and the code stolen ….

One quick question. Most of the time on every website it says make sure your iPhone is on 1.1.4 firmware. But my question is when you purchase your new iPhone, how can some one tell by just looking at the box that if its a 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 firmware.

hey can you please help me please. i have bought my iphone and i plug it in my computer and it automatically updated my 1.1.2 iphone to 1.1.4 and now my ipdone shows a picture of the itune icon and the usb wire with an arrow pointing towards the itune icon on my iphone. the iphone does not work all it has on the screen is the itune icon thing and the slider bar says “slides for emergency ” but the sim doesnt work and on my computer the itune says that the ” sim card is not the right one for the iphone p;ease put in a new sim card” thats like bascialy my whole situation pleas help me i just got it and i dont want my dad to get start bitching at me. i think it’s beacuse of my firmware thats why. but no idea wat to do since i cant use my iphone.

There is nothing to worry about, just use iPlus or ZiPhone(if you have issues with iPlus) and you are all set!

Hey i have a question to anyone who has just bought an iphone recently (assuming its 1.1.4 OTB) and have used the iPLUS software on it.
Has it worked with no flaws on the iphone? Meaning do all the features work properly (youtube, wifi, itoogle, etc…)?
David : I am yet to see a 1.1.4 OTB! But that doesn’t matter since bootloader is not changed with 1.1.4 and it is still at 4.6…. Just use iPlus and you are good to go! It worked without a hitch… Go ahead and DO it

dave : fakeBL lets you completely get back to the pristine factory state. With the release pwnage though, it changed! All the iPhones screwed by ZiPhone can now be back to work using BootNeuter… I suggest you hold off for some time before it is tested and verified completely

Simple : Just restore your iPhone to 1.1.4 using iTunes as described here http://ilikemyiphone.com/?p=221 you won’t get the original bootloader back since you used ZiPhone already… but not to worry, BootNeuter helps you get back to original! For now restore and use iPlus / iLiberty+

oh btw i heard there alil issue with using iplus. i heard that voice mail or mail and youtube dont work using iplus. is that true. anything else that going to have an error when using iplus? is it as good as ziphone or better?
Much better than ZiPhone! I had no issues with iPlus 2.0b ever! Just the latest versions of iTunes / iPlus helps

Anyone knows how to downgrade the iphone firmware 1.1.4 to 1.1.3. It will be great if you can share the steps by steps guide as to how to downgrade it. I have a problem to download all package as I get an error in downloading packing with firmware 1.1.4. I believe, the only solution is to download the firmware. Am i right ? Please reply
ethan : I strongly recommend you to stick to 1.1.4 … Just restore to 1.1.4 and follow iLiberty+ for the best results cos’ 1.1.3 is old school now

Quick question that may of been answered above, I have a OTB 1.1.3 unlocked using ziPhone iPhone that I am using on Tmobile. To upgrade to 1.1.4, can I just restore using iTunes, then download ziPhone 2.5 and run it? If not, what it the easiest way to get 1.1.4 on it?

Yep, you can! All you have to do is restore your iPhone to 1.1.4 and then use iLiberty+!

whenever i press alt-ctrl-del to turn off my itunes helper i dont have the tab that will let me get to all of the files on my computer and i need to know a way to fix that are a different way to turn off itunes helper if anybody knows plz message back.

Text on the screen probably refers to iLiberty or ZiPhone being used to unlock your iPhone. Please be more specific (firmware/tool used/xp/mac…) for a better resolution…

I have AT&T but want to use an unlocked iphone so i don’t have to pay for the data plan. I unlocked my iphone using Ziphone and when i put my AT&T sim card in it…i have no service. i have little dots only in the upper left corner…i am wondering if hat i want is impossible? i have tried with 1.1.4 and 1.1.3. i have also tried iliberty.

Then use iLiberty + to activate it, you need not unlock it for ATT.
You may also try iPhone 2.0 but should use pwnage or winpwn.

Well that’s what I have been doing ever since I got this iPhone! Though I needed data plan,added Media Net for $20. Never signed a contract!!
You should disable EDGE/3G access though to avoid huge bills!

By downloading 1.1.4 firmware file from downloads section on this site. Use iTunes and hit restore button holding the Shift(Windows), Option(MAC) key and selecting the file! Simple huh!

I took my iphone to a guy to unlock it and jailbreak it.. The unlock and jailbreak worked however, it didn't activate the phone. So now the iphone is sitting ont he screen that says NO SIM CARD INSTALLED, please insert a valid sim with no pin lock to activate iphone… does anyone know how to fix this.
I have researched a few tricks for the iphone myself. I would suggest waiting for the new firmware upgrades to take efffect. Upgrading now would only leave you stuck.
