Dev Team’s BootNeuter fixes Bootloader without pwnage – Windows / Mac Guide

3 April 2008 9,141 views 45 Comments

With the release of PWNAGE, we now have BootNeuter to get any Bootloader to work with the future releases of iPhone firmwares! If you have a 3.8 BL (restoring to 1.0.2 / 1.1.1 using iPlus) you can now use BootNeuter to get back to 3.9 / 4.6 BL and fakeblank it which means no more restrictions with bootloaders! You can do it all from the comfort of your iPhone as shown :)

Well, since Zibri forced all ZiPhone users to 3.9 BL voiding their warranties (since we can’t get 4.6BL back!), BootNeuter comes to the rescue yet again…. the image better describes it all :) So, rock and roll with pawnage, wait for ipsw tool to build your own firmwares and then start the party atleast till the official release of iPhone 2.0 firmware! It should sustain the unlock and jailbreak out of the box :) More on this here … All props to the Dev team :) Donate and keep the iPhone hackery alive!

Just download this file for 1.1.4.

Extract the BootNeuter.app and SSH it to your iPhone using FUGU (Mac) or WinSCP (Windows).

Then set the suid bit for root and change the owner to root using the following commands via SSH :

chmod u+s /Applications/BootNeuter.app/BootNeuter
chown root:wheel /Applications/BootNeuter.app/BootNeuter

Steps to follow : (Continued)

Settings -> General -> Auto-Lock -> Never (To ensure a hassle-free WiFi FTP!).

Then note down the IP address from Settings -> WiFi

bootNeuterWiFi.jpg

SSH BootNeuter.app to your iPhone using FUGU (Mac) or WinSCP (Windows). (User : root, Port : 22, password : alpine).

Launch Terminal (Mac) or Command Prompt (Windows) and enter the commands as shown :

password : alpine

copy the following for the last 2 commands and paste in the Terminal:

chmod u+s /Applications/BootNeuter.app/BootNeuter
chown root:wheel /Applications/BootNeuter.app/BootNeuter

Restart the SpringBoard and now you have a fully functional BootNeuter.app!

How do I set the suid bit for root and change the owner to root? And when i SSH it to my phone, where should it be put?, the whole folder? I use WinSCP.
    Thanks

Clint : Once you FTP the app to your iPhone, launch terminal and run the code exactly as shown (the 2 lines)…. Just cd to the Applications directory and run the commands on your iPhone (mobile terminal ..)

  • sim said:

is that the terminal vt thing??
    i’m sorry i haven’t used it before..
Can someone explain the method step by step??

  • kiran (author) said:

sim : yep, you can use terminal vt for the process … If you use pwnage, you need not do all these steps but just to change the bootloader, you might want to follow this….

Once you FTP BootNeuter to your iPhone’s Applications directory, launch vt-terminal and change directory to Applications and thn run the commands exactly as shown…

I am at school, may post a terminal screenshot later…

Ok, I added the bootneuter.app folder to the root/applications via SSH and then ran the two codes in the terminal using WinSCP for both. I now have the bootneuter icon, and it opens to the screen shown in the shot above but then closes after five seconds or so. It never searches for anything or allows to change anything? Did I do something wrong. 1.1.4 jailbroken phone with ziphone.

Clint : Follow the updated guide :) It should work!

I got it off of the installer from a source and it did all the settings for me I guess because I was able to use it. Thanks so much for the replies. What did the baseband unlock do? Did that unlock the phone? I didn’t need it unlocked but it don’t matter to me if it is? Or is that something else? I did have a problem with a very low speaker volume right after it upgraded my bootloader back but it seems to be ok again.

  • sim said:

thank u kiran.. Even i got it off d installer and it worked perfectly.. Btw are u indian??

can somebody please put a fully operational BootNeuter on installer?

  • Than said:

why does the bootneuter screen come up, but it feels like it hangs, then the spring board loads again.

  • kiran (author) said:

Than : You should give it the right permissions as described in the post.

I Apologize, what are ther permissions?

    I used the commands:
    chmod u+s /Applications/BootNeuter.app/BootNeuter
    chown root:wheel /Applications/BootNeuter.app/BootNeuter

I was recieving errors with the commands, but thats because I was not looged on to the root. Now i am but it still does seem to work.

hi, i’ve ssh’d bootneuter to my iphone 2g and entered the 2 commands but the icon does not appear on my springboard :(

    could anybody please help?

    thanks

  • kiran (author) said:

rene : sorry for the confusion but this method is outdated.

All you have to do is launch Cydia (given that you pwned the iPhone already) and search for Bootneuter. No more command line!

  • rene said:

thanks for your help kiran. I tried looking for bootneuter both on cydia and installer and I cannot find it. My purpose is to re-lock my iPhone so I could take it to an apple genius for repairs without voiding my warranty.

    Thanks

Smart move and it always helps! Best bet is to restore to 2.1 using iTunes , it should erase all hacks whatsoever!

  • rene said:

after I restore it using iTunes will I be able to re-unlock it again or will it be bricked?

    Thanks once again ;)

  • kiran (author) said:

rene : You are sailing in the best boat as far as unlocking is concerned given that you have a fully unlockable baseband even with the latest firmware!

You will be able to unlock it no problem.. go for it!
