This cannot be stressed enough. Skip the latest Software Update 3.1.3 and have a nice time with your 3.1.2 iPhone 2G/3G/3GS! Apple supposedly fixed some bugs with 3.1.3 but as always they strive hard to break the jailbreak capability which in-turn breaks the unlocking capability.
iPhone Dev Team strongly suggests you tame your temptations to update your iPhones to 3.1.3! iPhone 4.0 is the way to go (we still have few months atleast though)..
Google on the other hand released the most wanted OTA update for the Nexus One today (coincidence?!). Google encourages the users to use their devices however they like and even provides a tool to unlock the full potential of the Nexus One unlike Apple!

A direct update is a serious no no
You may try downgrading but I don't think it will work… You can still jailbreak I suppose using custom firmware I will update tonight but no unlock for now…

My 3gs had a hard crash so we had to upgrade to 3.1.3 I have been trying for a few hours now. I have a good redsn0w, which I heard works but it won't read the 3.1.3 ipsw I found & it does read the 3.1.2. Almost thought I had it but itunes won't let me go back to 3.1.2 Starting to feel hopeless. Help?
Looking for unlock or jailbreak? It cannot be unlocked. Did you try ultrasn0w or custom firmware?

It can already be jailbroken but not unlock though..
