Until recently, unlocking the iPhone has been a great deal. Having covered the iPhone since the original iPhone was unveiled, I know how much of a pain unlocking…
iPhone 3G
Apple released iOS 4.2 for the masses finally. While it does some nice things on an iPad, there isn’t much for iPhone 3G/3GS/4 if you are happy with…
The Dev Team did it yet again! The cat and mouse game is on! All iPhone 3G owners (no matter what firmware you have) can now unlock their devices!
Lets get started with a step by step guide (It will be a short one this time around!)
1) Update your iPhone 3G to 3.0 . You have two options here :
- redsn0w (DIY Quick!)
- Pwnage Tool (Download the Custom Firmware 3.0 if you want to Jailbreak directly without messing with other tools)
Redsn0w is a revolutionary way to jailbreak, activate, unlock an array of Apple’s devices based on iPhone 3.0 firmware. Devices like iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 1G/2G can easily be jailbroken, activated and unlocked (iPhone 2G – Automatic, iPhone 3G – Manually via Cydia & Ultrasn0w).
If you don’t want to go through the following steps and you just want the real deal, follow this guide rather wherein you can download the custom firmware file which should do the job for you!
The tool itself is so neatly packaged that there is not much left for you to figure out, just launch the application and follow the onscreen directions. All you have to do is download the following files to your computer (Windows or Intel based Mac) :
Step by step guide :
- Launch iTunes 8.2 and update to the latest firmware version 3.0, be it for your iPhone 2G,3G,3GS or iPod Touch 1G/2G
- Download Redsn0w package for your computer
- Redsn0w for an Intel based Macintosh Computer
- Redsn0w for a Windows based Computer
- Also download bootloader packages 39_46 ONLY if you are using iPhone 2G and place them in the same folder where Redsn0w resides
- Launch Redsn0w on your computer and click on ‘Browse’ button
UPDATE : A new version of custom firmware 3.1 for iPhone 2G/3G/3GS is now available here!
Free your iPhone 3G 3.0 from Apple’s chain by jailbreaking your iPhone which provides you with various customization features and even unlock feature which Apple and your official carrier hate! There are various options available to achieve this level of customization on your iPhone such as download firmware files, bootloader files, jailbreak/unlock tools such as Redsn0w/Pwnage or QuickPwn.
If you are not the one to download all the various files and just want the ultimate result, these files are waiting for you to download! If you rather want to start from scratch, this guide is for you.
- Caution #1 : Please proceed further only if you have an iPhone 3G. For all other devices, there is an other post in the works.
- Caution #2 : Ultrasn0w (iPhone unlock s/w) is yet to be released (soon). If you are looking for iPhone 3G unlock, please hold off for a day or two. Proceed only if you have no carrier signal at the moment and want to activate and jailbreak your iPhone 3G. You may also proceed if you signed an official iPhone contract and need jalbreak stuff! Ultrasn0w is now released!
- Caution #3 : A restore is going to wipe the iPhone clean. Hence, please make a backup of all the info using iTunes and then proceed.
Step 1) Download Files (Please read the following carefully)
- Download the following files ONLY if you have an Official iPhone contract with your cell carrier (ATT and others….)
- iPhone 3G 3.0 Custom Firmware Not Activated Official Carriers Part 1
- iPhone 3G 3.0 Custom Firmware Not Activated Official Carriers Part 2
OR
- Download the following files ONLY if you don’t have iPhone contract (T-Mobile and others…)
- iPhone 3G 3.0 Custom Firmware Activated for Other Carriers Part 1
- iPhone 3G 3.0 Custom Firmware Activated for Other Carriers Part 2
The evil AT&T is at it again, this time with an even cheaper tactic to hose the average user. They have announced a contract-free iPhone 3G for a whopping $599/$699 (8GB/16GB) with a possible 32GB iPhone round the block(June ’09). Since they are still locking you with AT&T though without a contract, it is a lame idea by AT&T.
So how in the world are developers, tech-enthusiasts, T-Mobile lovers exposed to this amazing Apple’s offering? Well, Microsoft to the rescue and some crazy-ass tactics to hit AT&T hard, real hard 😉
Lets look at it this way(Reference : 8GB iPhone 3G):
I have been using RichardSolo 1800 for quite some time now and all I have to say is it packs quite a punch when it comes to holding…
Go ahead and follow this if you have a jailbroken iPhone 3G (Firmware below 2.2.1) and don’t want to mess around with the unlocking tools for 2.2.1 firmware.…
Those of you who want iPhone 3G 2.2.1 firmware with 2.28 Baseband and Cydia, download both the files below and join them using hj split. This works both on…
For a change, I published 3 videos which definitely enables a total noob to unlock his/her iPhone without much difficulty. Latest Firmware via iTunes (2.2), QuickPwn (Jailbreak) and yellowsn0w via Cydia/installer (Unlock) hold the three key steps for a successful unlock.
Before proceeding further, make sure you are equipped with the following :
1) Strictly iPhone 3G Updated to 2.2 firmware via iTunes (2G iPhones have a different process – BootNeuter from Cydia).
2) Intel Mac (10.5.6 s/w update) or Windows machine. [Mac users, make sure DFU mode is enabled (10.5.6 s.w update and Unibod Macs have issues with iPhone not being recognized while Jailbreaking (QuickPwn).]
3) WiFi Network recommended. (If you don’t have a Wireless Router, try creating an Ad-Hoc WiFi network on your PC/Mac.
4) Make sure SIM Pin is disabled. Put your SIM in your old phone and disable the Pin.
