Backing up Cydia apps has always been a pain! Different implementations exist with little or no success. I recently lost all my Cydia Apps since I thought I backed them up just fine (using AptBackup which can be installed from Cydia). How to save hours trying to get back all the apps installed in Cydia? And here goes the step by step guide to achieve it :
Test environment : I have used AptBackup while restoring iPhone 3G from 2.2 to 2.2.1 firmware on a Mac. I used iTunes 8.0.2.
And here goes the step by step guide to achieve it :
1) Install AptBackup and OpenSSH from Cydia
2) Launch AptBackup on Cydia and hit the ‘Backup’ button
3) Make sure SSH is on and backup the 3 filesaptbackup.cydiasources.tgz,
aptbackup_dpkg-packages.txt and aptbackup_openssh.tgz found at ~/var/mobile/Library/Preferences (this is a precautionary step, just in case AptBackup fails)
4) Connect iPhone to iTunes and let it fully backup (you may click the sync button iTunes as well)
5) Restore to the firmware of your choice (in this case a custom firmware 2.2.1 with 2.28 baseband)
6) Jailbreak using QuickPwn if you didn’t use custom firmware in step 5 and install AptBackup and nothing else for now
7) Now connect to iTunes and restore data from the latest backup (iTunes should automatically prompt you)
8) Now launch AptBackup and hit the restore button, it should take a while depending on the number of applications you backed up from Cydia. It should then automatically install them for you while you were waiting!
9) Just in case AptBackup didn’t do what it was supposed to, install openSSH and restore the 3 files to ~/var/mobile/Library/Preferences you backed up in step 3 and then launch AptBackup and hit restore!
If you follow these steps closely, you should easy succeed backing up and restoring Cydia apps, an increasingly important routine with frequent firmware updates from Apple!
hey thanks for commenting on my blog, every little bit helps. take care.
Hang on. How do u back up cracked apps then?
you have to sync and have AppSync for OS 3.0 insalled…
oh how about not wasting your money because most of them get paid by advertising from the lite versions
Thanks for the extra instructions. Last time I did this AptBackup failed halfway through, but still deleted its files!
Unfortunately it still doesn’t seem to restore user added sources, but at least they’re in the files you mention!
if you have cracked apps you should simply save the ipa files after you've dragged them into itunes. i have them in a separate saved folder for just that reason. otherwise you need to download them all over again. of course since itunes doesn't update those apps downloading them again will get you the latest version
this will work for iphone 3gs right so i want to do it from 3g to 3gs?
Yes it will. You can always restore the backup of 3G to 3GS. Make sure you name your iPhone to something you can easily recognize at the time of restore process. Follow the guide step by step..
PkgBackup is a new app which costs around $3.49 in Cydia, it will definitely work, I tried yesterday!
Or, you could download the cracked version of PkgBackup. This can be found in two repos – http://repo.beyouriphone.com/, and http://sinfuliphonerepo.com/.
the beyouriphone one wont work

Thanks for enabling me to acquire new thoughts about computer systems.
I also hold the belief that one of the best ways to help keep your
notebook in prime condition is to use a hard plastic-type case, or even shell, that fits over the
top of one’s computer. These kind of protective gear will be model unique since they are manufactured
to fit perfectly on the natural casing. You can buy all of them directly from the seller, or via third party places if they are for your
laptop computer, however not every laptop can have a shell on the market.
Once more, thanks for your suggestions.
