Pwn your iPhone 3G when at firmware version 2.1 using QuickPwn 2.2 either using Windows or Mac(STRICTLY REQUIRED)

Use iTunes v8.0.2 on either Windows or Macs (Late 2008 Macbooks included) and hold the Shift (Windows) / Option (Mac) buttons and browse to the .ipsw you just downloaded (and joined) and let iTunes do the rest!

Hmmm…i dun get the "hold the Shift button" step.. I've downloaded & joined the custom firmware 2.2 & updated my iTunes to 8.02.. How do i actually open the custom firmware? Or how do i open from iTunes… Please guide me.

kegen : Make sure you pwned you device before trying to restore to 2.2 as described above. Once pwned using 2.1, connect the iPhone to iTunes and you will see the second image (image at the bottom) with the words restore and update in iTunes. Hold Shift (Windows) / Option (Mac) buttons and you should see a browse window to browse the pwned 2.2 file. Let me know if you could make it …

Moustafa : If you have a contract already, this Jailbreak (v2.2) is worth it. If you are using Gevey SIM or such, it is not worth it at this point!
If you pwned using QuickPwn or Pwnage at 2.1, all you have to do is Shift and select the downloaded firmware!
It deletes everything! Make a backup… or sync it back again via iTunes, don't restore the backup….. You might miss SMS, but you can follow my post on this blog to backup SMS.. other than that you are good to go!

when i click shift when it says download and install and download only and cancel it doesnt do anything HELP!
Moustafa : Be very careful, you have to hold the shift button and then click Restore button. Looks like you are directly restoring. That will mess up the baseband….
In regards to your custom 2.2 fw what is the root partition size? Default 500MB?

as far as i know, firmware 2.1 updates the baseband ,
in my case I want to have my device unlocked in future (when software unlock is available) ,and i was warned not to update to 2.1 since it will change the baseband version

Yazan : 2.1 Baseband is unlockable (in the works), hence it is fine but not 2.2 's.
Use HJ Split as described to join the files. Look for th elink to download the free file joiner HJSplit in the post.
why such as a large root partition at 1000mb? what is the purpose for a large partition, i think it will waste space. 500-600mb should be enough. can you create a ipsw file for everyone with this partition 500-600mb size?
Johnny : That was suggested by the developers if you plan on installing many applications. I can definitely make one with 600 MB but I have to split and upload them which takes time. Still at school, grad school loves evening hours at school for some reason!

Kiran – I believe I dled a 2.1 custom with activation already done and it did not work for me (no signal). But I can always try and revert back if it doesnt work. I just dont remember which one caused me the problem.

May be in the future, but given the complexity, we are looking at quite some time. Best bet, find a legal iPhone user and swap devices if possible (weird but that is the best I can think of right now)…

This spec should be the de-facto standard becuase of the following: anyone can change the logos using logome; 500mb root is enough because a symlink will be created pointing apps, fonts, etc…to the larger partition…1000mb wasting valuable space; installer can easily be removed using ssh; i don't understand why people would post an un-activated version of the ipsw…custom firmware is ideal for non-legit users. you at&t folks can just upgrade via itunes…if legit don't need third party apps.

My brother restored and upgraded his iphone 3G to 2.2 from 2.1. He was running before 2.1 with gevey 3G sim for unlocking the phone and it was working fine but now after the upgrade he is getting no service now i understand that there was a baseband update with OS 2.2 and my brother unknowingly updated the phone and lost the hardware mechanism of unlockin the phone here in middle east, do you think there is any way to bring down the baseband some how. I also tried many ways the phone can be brought down to 2.1 again but the baseband remains the same and some how does not go back to the later even if you try Ziphone or whatever ……..do you think there can be any solution to this problem…or we will have to wait for the dev team to come out with a way to sort this issue out.

I have a 16gb 3G with 2.1 (5F136) & Modem 02.11.07. I originally bought it unlocked as I live in UK and wanted it on Vodafone(UK), but at some time (I can't remember how or when) it managed to get locked to AT&T.
I bought and used the RebelSimCard which worked for a little bit, it then died, so I bought and used another one, which worked for a month, but now it's died again (although with reading forums etc, I think it may have been blocked…Hmmm)…anyway..
I have downloaded the custom firmware, but I need to clarify something.
I had installed iTunes 8 but I recently installed iTunes 7 in an attempt to downgrade or something to try to get it to work.
I have read on various forums, warnings from DEV team about not installing 2.2 etc or even the new iTunes if you want to soft unlock it in the future.
With iTunes 7 installed I cannot access my iphone 3g so was left in a quandry. I want to upgrade but I REALLY need it unlocked like before, do I need to, or can I downgrade the modem (baseband??), can I downgrade the firmware.
Is there anyway to get hold of the unlocked japanese firmware/baseband?????

Zaman : So far, no signs of such a project since the old baseband hacking hasn't yet proved futile yet. Only time will tell, any breakthrough will be posted as it sees the light of day.
Malcolm : Baseband downgrade : Not possible yet. Firmware downgrade : yes from 2.2pwned to 2.1. Best bet to wait, resist the temptation and use 2.1 happily till a software unlock pops up…

kiran. hey, happy thanksgiving! thanks for the custom de facto firmware you created for me. a quick question, was 533mb size the default root partition. after moving fonts, ringtones, applciation to the larger partition…i still had 165mb free on root. this free space is actually wasted…especially on a 8gb iphone. i could use this to store more songs.

kiran. just curious, what happens if you changed the default 533mb to 500mb. i am thinking pwnage will allow change down to 500mb, which i know is the minimum, when i used winpwn before those folks went MIA. i see other custom 2.2 ipsw for 3g created with 500mb root, but those are un-activated.
I didn’t want to mess it up with Cydia’s default recommended limit of 533 MB. Once the firmware created failed to boot. Not worth taking the risk!

2) I have an IP3G which I accidentally upgraded to 2.2 and my SIM proxy does not work now. Do I need to QPWN 2.2 it first and then use your custom firmware from iTunes or is there a shorter way?

Jibin : This firmware is pre-activated for all networks. Sorry to say that updated baseband cannot be downgraded and hence cannot be unlocked now. Some site claims it can be unlocked by sim proxy, will publish article when verified that it work. At 2.2 firmware, you can use it as an iPod after you jailbreak (unless you are a legit iPhone user)….

It is the same for any carrier. I use Pwnage 2.2.1 for Mac.
can someone build me a 500mb root ipsw. there is no reason why the root partition should be over 500mb. 500mb is my de facto standard, not 533mb. when you have an 8gb, every mb makes a difference.

elba : Well, frankly speaking, Gevey SIMs are giving me nightmares with signals. Could not single out if it is f/w 2.2 issue or the Gevey SIM itself.
Technically, as long as you preserve your baseband, you are good to go on 2.2 and revert back if needed!

Could you please advise what steps should I take to upgrade to version 2.2. Please note, I’m using a TurboSIM (not sure about it’s make though). so baseband preservation is a must. Can follow the steps described in this post or do I first have to upgrade to 2.1?

Iftikhar : I have mixed answers for you. Turbo SIM at 2.2 by preserving baseband may give flaky signal. If the turbo sim gave you no problems at all, then you MUST first restore to 2.1 firmware via iTunes and then use QuickPwn to Jailbreak it. (Check downloads section for files). Once in 2.1 after you jailbroke, restore to the firmware on this page…

Thanks for the reply kiran, once I’m downloading firmware 2.1 now. Please advise which version of QuickPwn (for Windows) do I need once upgraded to 2.1. As for the Turbo SIM, sometimes, if I switch my phone off and back on, I get no service, but restarting the phone a couple of times restores the service, once I get the signal I never lose it unless the phone is restarted. Please advise if I should stay away from the updates for now. I really need 2.1 as there are some desired software in App Store that run only on fw 2.1.
You can use the latest version in downloads section for both 2.1 and 2.2…. You are on the right track, go ahead!

Ignore the bossprefs for now, exact steps for 2.2 :
make sure you are on 2.1 (use quickpwn to jailbreak if you didn’t already)
then use the firmware here and restore using iTunes to 2.2 (hold shift / option keys and hit restore button)…

I have used your instructions to upgrade my iPhone 3G to fw 2.1 and it worked great. I have noticed that my Turbo SIM does not lose connection anymore if I restart the phone. Thank you very much indeed for the help.
A couple of things,
1. Do you think there is anything to consider before I jump into upgrading to v2.2?
2. Once my phone was updated and Pwned, I used iTunes to restore the settings from backup, this restored my e-mail accounts and contacts etc. Will this course any issues with v2.2 update?

Now, download the firmware 2.2 from this post and use iTunes to restore to 2.2…

I have tried restoring my iphone to Ver 2.1 and after it goes through the restoration process and verifies the software I get an unknown error and it states that the iphone can not be restored. Any ideas?
Unknown error (1013)
Error 1013 is a known error, but it actually restored to 2.1! Check your iPhone firmware, it must be 2.1….
Whenever I try to restore to 2.1 and it gives me the message the iphone remains in Recovery mode (whatever you refer to the screen that displays the itunes logo and USB) so even if I wanted to I couldnt check the Version. I have to restore it afterwards to 2.2 just to make it function again. I notice that when the 2.2 restore is being conducted a progress bar appears underneath the Apple logo, while the 2.1 restore only has a spiral at the bottom of the screen.

this elba.. as you know I upgrade your 533 defacto firmware with no problem.. but today my phone is out battery, and cannot restart again.. I tried to charge it via pc, but it couldnot recogize it.. I try to charge it from wall socet, it work only to apple logo for few seconds.. it tried to put it DFU it works but when I took out of wall socket, it suddenly goes to black screen, and same thing..

another is that when i tried updating through i tune (folllowing the instructions herein) i got an error 1403 or 1413. (i used quickpwn 2.2 by the way to jailbreak my iphone).

I am confused. Are you trying to preserve the baseband? Download all 3 files and hjsplit should join them, never had a problem with that.
Use quickpwn at 2.1 and then use this firmware to restore from iTunes…

Elba : It shouldn’t be hardware problem since you can see dfu screen. Try plugging it in dfu screen to the computer and leave it such for few hours. Unplug and try powering on, hopefully you should see apple logo. You don’t have to worry at all, Apple will replace the device no matter what…

Finally My PC found my iphone, only with DFU mode.. it told me to restore the iphone back to 2.1.. So I tried to resotred to get into action, with no luck.. in the middile of restore, my iphone hungs on black screen and Pc still seraching, SO re-enter into DFU, then the itunes gave error 1600

elba : hmmm, not that I think of but I would fool around the DFU mode. I never had a problem with whatever firmware I had till date unless you have a hardware issue (like broken home button or power button)…

hey folks..i downloaded the split files and joined to create the custom isw. But when i try to restore from itune i get
“An unknown error occured (1403)”.
Anyone know what it is?
i had previously upgraded to 2.2 using shift restore from devteam’s isw, then downgraded back to 2.1 + cedia jailbreak…not sure if my baseband is still 2.2 ish tho?
any help is much appreciated
iphoneSG : 1403 is a known error and it should still restore the firmware despite the error.
CHeck your baseband : Go to settings -> general -> about and look for modem firmware. If it is 2.11 then you are fine.
7sid : So you have an official iPhone contract is it? Did you pwn your iPhone before restoring the custom firmware downloaded here?

Well, if you have a legal iPhone contract, you need to use the custom firmware which is not activated (check my other post)…
as i posted on previous comment, after i pwned with firmware 2.1 everything it's ok (means iphone is jailbreak properly, network and carrier connected to carrier). After updating to v2.2 with ct firmware, carrier null null. and i have contract plan for 3 years with fido.
Hi Kiran, i just have one question. I have an iPhone 3G (handmedown) It was my friends' but she bought a new one so she gave the old one to me. She had it activated with ATT (legit) , but i want to use it with t-mobile… i want to use the ipsw with 1000 MB root partition… would i be able to use it with t-mobile in the future? or should I use the other ipsw activated for t-mobile (533mb partition)?
P.S. the iPhone is jailbroken already!

I am in the UK – O2 (=At&t) and I want to use with T-Mobile.
Running 2.1 but I've run a 2.2 and it's much quicker. I want to change to 2.2 with the old baseband – I dont run a Mac so can you provide an activated solution for the UK users. I have not activated as I'm waiting for the YellowSnow release.

checked everything out and read through various sites to check if I need activatedor non activated version but it looks like the non-activated version would be the one.
I'm in the carribbean, my local carriers are not supported so my 2.1 jailbroken 3G is now a glorified ipod. obviously I'm awaiting yellowsn0w.
My question, in my situation the [b]unactivated[/b] custom F/W version would serve just fine right? (think due to me being non-legit user and legit ones needing the activated version I guess)

… but, I don't think it's a hardware problem, it's very random.. looks like the process to keep the phone silent is triggered randomly after some time when turning on the iphone.. on the other hand some people say it's related to a problem with the earphones sensor (like dust or something).. someone else experiencing similar issues? like I said I will check with the store, but since most of the people that reported this have jailbreak, looks like more related to software and may be someone else have seen a software fix to this ( like bossprefs: I already tried a manual way to set the silent service on and off, but my phone keeps changing to silent after some minutes :S )

Thank you! Yeah, you are covered if there is a sensor or any inner detail issue. Try demonstrating it at the apple store. Make sure you flash a factory firmware before stepping in the store!Sent from my iPhone

its jailbroken and activated because im using it on tmobile.

naz : Are you a Mac user or Windows?
First you have to get to 2.1 using iTunes and Apple's official firmware, then Use QuickPwn for jailbreaking it… Once you jailbreak it, use the firmware downloaded here via iTunes to get to 2.2 with older baseband. This way you can retain your baseband for yellowsn0w tonight…

Download 2.1 firmware file from downloads section.. save it to your desktop.
Open iTunes and hold the shift button on your keyboard and hit restore button in iTunes , a browser pops up, browse to the downloaded file (2.1 on desktop) and click ok…

NIL : If you are having a 2G iPhone, you shouldn't even be attempting this firmware. This is only for iPhone 3G.

kiran, can you help me out bro =) ? I am so stuck in the jailbreak process. I just got my iPhone 3g, and when i am about to jailbreak it with QuickpWn, i stuck at the same point every time. It´s when i am about to release home button at 10 sec, it just stops at 9 for some reasons, and QuickpWn freezes. I can not exit quickpawn, and i have to restore my iPhone over and over and over again. And not to mention that my iMac can not be rebooted cos quickpawn can not be quited. and the comand Ctrl + CMD + esc, does not work neither on my mac when this happen =) what a hell is wrong ? If you have any clues or tips, let me know =)
