Note : If you are planning on using Gevey SIM, please take a quick peek at this marathon race into chasing the mystery behind Pwned iPhone 3G 2.2 and Gevey SIM issues.
This custom pwned firmware version 2.2 has the older Baseband, Factory default logos (No Pwnapple at boot!) , Pre-activated for non-ATT users, Root Partition size 1000 MB, Cydia and Installer as a bonus to make life simple!
Recommended Steps :
Pwn your iPhone 3G when at firmware version 2.1 using QuickPwn 2.2 either using Windows or Mac(STRICTLY REQUIRED)
Now, download this Custom Firmware v2.2 using the following Rapidshare links (totalling 236.6 MB, use HJSplit to Join these files)
iPhone1_2_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw.001
The following ipsw is with 533 MB root partition (DeFacto as it is termed by Johnny)!
No boot logos (standard apple logo)
533mb root partition
No baseband upgrade
cydia,installer
Activated for T-mobile
You Tube activated
iPhone1_2_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore_iLikeMyiPhone_533MB_Activated.ipsw.001
iPhone1_2_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore_iLikeMyiPhone_533MB_Activated.ipsw.002
iPhone1_2_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore_iLikeMyiPhone_533MB_Activated.ipsw.003
Use iTunes v8.0.2 on either Windows or Macs (Late 2008 Macbooks included) and hold the Shift (Windows) / Option (Mac) buttons and browse to the .ipsw you just downloaded (and joined) and let iTunes do the rest!
You should now have iPhone 2.2 firmware with all the new features and the best of Open Source offerings (Cydia and its wonderful applications which Apple may never approve in the near future!).

I see that above give a custom firmware for Tmobile. Well, how do you build your own .IPSW for a specific carrier?
It is the same for any carrier. I use Pwnage 2.2.1 for Mac.
can someone build me a 500mb root ipsw. there is no reason why the root partition should be over 500mb. 500mb is my de facto standard, not 533mb. when you have an 8gb, every mb makes a difference.
kiran. if i have your ear, let me know if you can help me with this and when?
I live abroad, If I wanted to build a custom .IPSW for the overseas sim, can I? Will it work as the original sim?
I have iphone 3g with 2.1 firmware jailbreak with Gevey sim that works fine now, Do you recommand that i upgrade to your 2.2 firmware
thanks
elba : Well, frankly speaking, Gevey SIMs are giving me nightmares with signals. Could not single out if it is f/w 2.2 issue or the Gevey SIM itself.
Technically, as long as you preserve your baseband, you are good to go on 2.2 and revert back if needed!
so how about those of us who mistakenly updated our iphones to 2.2 without preserving the baseband.can somebody plsssss help me.i am using the 16gig and i just got it 2days ago!!!sad face
Very unfortunate but yeah, right now we have no other alternative. A sim proxy solution recently emerged, will be published once verified.
hurry kiran n tanx in advance.so it means i shdn’t waste time to download the custom pwn u have uploaded cos it is of no use for those of us who mistakenly wiped out our baseband?
Yep, exactly. Better off directly jailbreaking 2.2 using QuickPwn…
thanks for reply
which files should I used, better? Is it 1000Mb or the other one ( Jhonny)????
Hi,
I have the following config:
iPhone 16 GB
Version: 2.0 (5A347)
Modem Firmware: 01.45.00
Could you please advise what steps should I take to upgrade to version 2.2. Please note, I’m using a TurboSIM (not sure about it’s make though). so baseband preservation is a must. Can follow the steps described in this post or do I first have to upgrade to 2.1?
Any help would be great appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Sorry I forgot to mention in my last post that my iPhone is the 3G edition.
Iftikhar : I have mixed answers for you. Turbo SIM at 2.2 by preserving baseband may give flaky signal. If the turbo sim gave you no problems at all, then you MUST first restore to 2.1 firmware via iTunes and then use QuickPwn to Jailbreak it. (Check downloads section for files). Once in 2.1 after you jailbroke, restore to the firmware on this page…
elba : Use the 533MB one and use bossprefs to create symbolic links to the apps…
Thanks for the reply kiran, once I’m downloading firmware 2.1 now. Please advise which version of QuickPwn (for Windows) do I need once upgraded to 2.1. As for the Turbo SIM, sometimes, if I switch my phone off and back on, I get no service, but restarting the phone a couple of times restores the service, once I get the signal I never lose it unless the phone is restarted. Please advise if I should stay away from the updates for now. I really need 2.1 as there are some desired software in App Store that run only on fw 2.1.
You can use the latest version in downloads section for both 2.1 and 2.2…. You are on the right track, go ahead!
thanks kiran.. What do you mean with bossprefs to create symbolic links to the apps???…
Can you tell me the exact steps to upload the 2.2? i will apperiate you>>>
Ignore the bossprefs for now, exact steps for 2.2 :
make sure you are on 2.1 (use quickpwn to jailbreak if you didn’t already)
then use the firmware here and restore using iTunes to 2.2 (hold shift / option keys and hit restore button)…
thank you again:
I am now downloading DeFacto as it is termed by Johnny firmware.. is that the correct firmware??? I have already Used QuickPwn Jailbroken 2.1 now in my iphone. Is there need to do it again, or no???
thanks again
No need to quickpwn 2.1 again, yeah use the defacto f/w….
thanks
I will tell the results after I finish!!!
I have used your instructions to upgrade my iPhone 3G to fw 2.1 and it worked great. I have noticed that my Turbo SIM does not lose connection anymore if I restart the phone. Thank you very much indeed for the help.
A couple of things,
1. Do you think there is anything to consider before I jump into upgrading to v2.2?
2. Once my phone was updated and Pwned, I used iTunes to restore the settings from backup, this restored my e-mail accounts and contacts etc. Will this course any issues with v2.2 update?
Thanks again for your help.
Well, it should work just fine with 2.2, no issues. Apple solved restore problems woth 2.0… Go ahead and restore to the pwned software downloaded here from iTunes (shift/Option key + Restore)
thank you kiran, every thing went smooth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
