Note : If you are planning on using Gevey SIM, please take a quick peek at this marathon race into chasing the mystery behind Pwned iPhone 3G 2.2 and Gevey SIM issues.
This custom pwned firmware version 2.2 has the older Baseband, Factory default logos (No Pwnapple at boot!) , Pre-activated for non-ATT users, Root Partition size 1000 MB, Cydia and Installer as a bonus to make life simple!
Recommended Steps :
Pwn your iPhone 3G when at firmware version 2.1 using QuickPwn 2.2 either using Windows or Mac(STRICTLY REQUIRED)
Now, download this Custom Firmware v2.2 using the following Rapidshare links (totalling 236.6 MB, use HJSplit to Join these files)

The following ipsw is with 533 MB root partition (DeFacto as it is termed by Johnny)!
No boot logos (standard apple logo)
533mb root partition
No baseband upgrade
cydia,installer
Activated for T-mobile
You Tube activated
iPhone1_2_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore_iLikeMyiPhone_533MB_Activated.ipsw.001
iPhone1_2_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore_iLikeMyiPhone_533MB_Activated.ipsw.002
iPhone1_2_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore_iLikeMyiPhone_533MB_Activated.ipsw.003
Use iTunes v8.0.2 on either Windows or Macs (Late 2008 Macbooks included) and hold the Shift (Windows) / Option (Mac) buttons and browse to the .ipsw you just downloaded (and joined) and let iTunes do the rest!
You should now have iPhone 2.2 firmware with all the new features and the best of Open Source offerings (Cydia and its wonderful applications which Apple may never approve in the near future!).

I did that , and restart the restoration ,
the process goes fast to the same point and stops there , any idea 🙁

Hi Kiran,
My brother restored and upgraded his iphone 3G to 2.2 from 2.1. He was running before 2.1 with gevey 3G sim for unlocking the phone and it was working fine but now after the upgrade he is getting no service now i understand that there was a baseband update with OS 2.2 and my brother unknowingly updated the phone and lost the hardware mechanism of unlockin the phone here in middle east, do you think there is any way to bring down the baseband some how. I also tried many ways the phone can be brought down to 2.1 again but the baseband remains the same and some how does not go back to the later even if you try Ziphone or whatever ……..do you think there can be any solution to this problem…or we will have to wait for the dev team to come out with a way to sort this issue out.
Thank You N Regards,
Umair
Hi, This has probably been asked already, but I'm a newbie'ish to this.
I have a 16gb 3G with 2.1 (5F136) & Modem 02.11.07. I originally bought it unlocked as I live in UK and wanted it on Vodafone(UK), but at some time (I can't remember how or when) it managed to get locked to AT&T.
I bought and used the RebelSimCard which worked for a little bit, it then died, so I bought and used another one, which worked for a month, but now it's died again (although with reading forums etc, I think it may have been blocked…Hmmm)…anyway..
I have downloaded the custom firmware, but I need to clarify something.
I had installed iTunes 8 but I recently installed iTunes 7 in an attempt to downgrade or something to try to get it to work.
I have read on various forums, warnings from DEV team about not installing 2.2 etc or even the new iTunes if you want to soft unlock it in the future.
With iTunes 7 installed I cannot access my iphone 3g so was left in a quandry. I want to upgrade but I REALLY need it unlocked like before, do I need to, or can I downgrade the modem (baseband??), can I downgrade the firmware.
Is there anyway to get hold of the unlocked japanese firmware/baseband?????
Help!!…Help!!!
ronydebs : Strange! This is the exact firmware you are talking about!
Zaman : So far, no signs of such a project since the old baseband hacking hasn't yet proved futile yet. Only time will tell, any breakthrough will be posted as it sees the light of day.
Malcolm : Baseband downgrade : Not possible yet. Firmware downgrade : yes from 2.2pwned to 2.1. Best bet to wait, resist the temptation and use 2.1 happily till a software unlock pops up…
Hi!
I need help!, I stupidly updated my iphone to 2.2 from itunes now I cant use my turbo sim any longer?! Will this help? Should I download both firmwires or only one of them
kiran. hey, happy thanksgiving! thanks for the custom de facto firmware you created for me. a quick question, was 533mb size the default root partition. after moving fonts, ringtones, applciation to the larger partition…i still had 165mb free on root. this free space is actually wasted…especially on a 8gb iphone. i could use this to store more songs.
ghaz : Bad news, no fix as of now 🙁
Johnny : Happy Thanksgiving! Yeah, 533MB is the right size!
kiran. just curious, what happens if you changed the default 533mb to 500mb. i am thinking pwnage will allow change down to 500mb, which i know is the minimum, when i used winpwn before those folks went MIA. i see other custom 2.2 ipsw for 3g created with 500mb root, but those are un-activated.
I didn’t want to mess it up with Cydia’s default recommended limit of 533 MB. Once the firmware created failed to boot. Not worth taking the risk!
kiran.
hey, can you build a 500mb for me to test. all other specs the same.
yo kiran im a legit user do i jailbreak then wait for itunes to tell me carrier updat?
Legit means that the sim didnt need unlocking right if it does then tell me what to do i bought it from the original vodafone egypt branch with the sim unlocked
This means that there is chance of unlock?
What is the difference between the 2 downloads? im noobie? what does the root partition size do?
Hi Kiran.
I have tmobile here in the U.S. and I have an iphone 3g 16gb with version 2.1 pwned. My question is, can i continue to use my gevey 3g sim unlocker after performing the update to 2.2 without baseband update?
Arash : Yes sir, you can!
George : Yep, potential unlock, before Christmas I believe! Root partition can be ignored given that it doesn’t make much of a difference now, it can be achieved by using symbolic links…
Moustafa : Legit means yes, legally signed iPhone contract. You can wait for carrier to activate it.
Johnny : I can, overwhelming work right now..
Kiran, when can u make us the 500mb root ipsw? Can you do one today? Not too hard!
Hi, i just want to know if all three of each catagory firmware update needs to be downloaded….I am not sure what to do really but please let me know….thanks
Yes, all three (.001,.002,003) should be downloaded and then joined..
kiran. dude, can you build one for me with 500mb root or no? i prefer if can have one today, as i want to test some apps….a sofware 3G unlock is immenent!!! i wished we windows users had winpwn and not quickpwn. where the heck are those MIA winpwn developers, did they go on the lam? it’s like pulling teeth, asking people for help!
Kiran, Hi
Love your work. Have 2 questions though
1) Is the 533 MB custom firmware that you posted preactivated for all non AT&T networks or just for T-Mobile?
2) I have an IP3G which I accidentally upgraded to 2.2 and my SIM proxy does not work now. Do I need to QPWN 2.2 it first and then use your custom firmware from iTunes or is there a shorter way?
Happy Holidays. Cheers.
Jibin
Jibin : This firmware is pre-activated for all networks. Sorry to say that updated baseband cannot be downgraded and hence cannot be unlocked now. Some site claims it can be unlocked by sim proxy, will publish article when verified that it work. At 2.2 firmware, you can use it as an iPod after you jailbreak (unless you are a legit iPhone user)….
Thanks, Kiran
If I jailbreak by QWPN 2.2 and then do an iTunes restore to 2.1, will it downgrade? Apologies if this sounds like a stupid question but my understanding of this is quite limited.
Cheers.
