Within few days of Geohot’s Blackra1n, a much more elegant jailbreaking solution for the iPhone and iPod Touch is now released – Pwnage 3.1.4 for Mac (Download it here). This time around, users don’t have to fiddle around with DFU mode like they did with the last iteration of this tool.
All you have to do is create the custom firmware and Option-Restore (Mac) / Shift-Restore (Windows) the custom firmware in iTunes!

I'm daft… I did the blackra1n on my 3GS with version 3.1(7C144), worked fine, installed Cydia and Rock, no problems but cannot get any Dopey's apps to sync, or CORE crack stuff.. Do I need a custom firware for this?

Hmmm, custom firmware is to preserve baseband. Blackra1n doesn't preserve the baseband. If you need unlock, you need custom firmware.

I should say just unlock and I would recommend custom firmware cos' Geohot doesn't work on these full time while the Devs do!

first off I'd like to say I appreciate the replies, I'm in a haze right now on this blackra1n and jailbreaking.. but why have a custom ipsw for AT&T, if AT&T folks don't need unlock?

That way they can jailbreak. Windows users don't have access to Pwnage, so they rely on Custom firmware.

This tool should work just fine. Since you have 5.11, why not get to 3.1.2 and use blackra1n?

hi, if i really want to use the blackra1n to jb my phone, can i straight use it with my 3gs 3.1 without updating it to 3.1.2? also, does the jb a normal jb or a tethered jb? Thanks for the advice in advance!

Try blackra1n at 3.1 and then put it in restore mode and use this custom firmware!
