Unlock iPhone 3G / 3GS with baseband 5.11.07 using Blackra1n/Blacksn0w [Step by Step Video]

3 November 2009 85 Comments

Geohot released blackra1n (jailbreak) and blacksn0w (unlock) for the latest firmware/baseband combo on 3G and 3GS iPhones for both Mac and Windows platforms!

Features of blackra1n RC3 :

– Jailbreak / Unlock

– Hacktivate or legit activation

– All Macs (Intel and PPC) and windows

– (Possible) Tethering option enabled

blacksn0w

UPDATE : If you have 3.1.3 iPhone 3GS + 5.11.07 baseband and if blackra1n doesn’t work, try blacksn0w RC2 which can be installed by adding http://cydia.pushfix.info into Cydia sources. Please post a comment if you still have problems unlocking your 3GS.

Step by step instructions :

1) If your iPhone 3G/ 3GS is already @ 3.1.2 firmware with older baseband (using Custom 3.1.2 Firmware), you have no reason to do this! For 2G iPhones, BootNeuter is still a valid permanent unlock solution!

2) If your iPhone is 3.1.2 out of the box and has 5.11.07 baseband or if you accidentally upgraded to 3.1.2 firmware on iTunes, then follow the next few steps.

3) Visit Geohot’s blackra1n.com website.

4) Download either Windows or Mac versions of Blackra1n depending on what platform you are using!

5) Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch blackra1n application (blackra1n.exe for Windows and blackra1n for Mac) and click ‘make it ra1n’.

6) Your iPhone will reboot and you will see blackra1n.app on the homescreen. Launch it and install blacksn0w to unlock 5.11.07 baseband for any GSM carrier!

Pretty straightforward, isn’t it? Great job by Geohot. Please spread the word that iPhone unlocks will and always be free, never pay a penny to online scammers!

    I'm a 3gs user. I've read that:
#BlackRa1n only supports a tethered jailbreak. This means that once jailbroken you should not let your battery die. If it does die you will need to reconnect it to the computer and use BlackRa1n to boot it.#
Does this mean I cant turn it off and then on without a computer? Could I jailbreak it using a diffrent tool and then unlock using blacksnow?

  • iLikeMyiPhone said:

Unless your iPhone 3GS has the new bootloader that requires tethered jailbreak, you are good to go.

Thanks for a reply. I'm sending you an e-mail since I dont understand…

  • iLikeMyiPhone said:

Hi, so tell me if i update 3.1.2 from itunes, that has the latest baseband of 5.11.07?
then run blackrain and it should jailbreak and unlock the phone?
mine is not contract phone so it needs to be hacktivated. Will this program def unlock it??

  • iLikeMyiPhone said:

Yes, it will definitely unlock it, that is what this program is all about!

Don't deliberately update to 5.11.07 though! Preserve 4.26 if you can…

  • Ian said:

but if i update to 3.1.2 via itunes wont it update the baseband to 5.11.07?
how would i preserve it to 4.26.
I dont know what version of baseband i have.

  • iLikeMyiPhone said:

If you already have 4.26 baseband, then use the custom firmware. It preserves the baseband!

  • Bote said:

you can check your FW by going to Setting-General-About then scroll all the way down. You will see your Modem firmware >>>> and thats your BB

  • Ian said:

camt seem to get the custom firmware tho, rapidshares just dont seem to load and takes ages.just tell me if i update via itunes to 3.1.2 it will change the baseband to 5.11.07 wont it?
if so i can use this program to unlock and run yes?

  • iLikeMyiPhone said:

I would recommend not to get 5.11 baseband if you still have 4.26 but it is up to you.

  • ian said:

    works like a charm thanks

Thanks for the reply. As stated, I have a 3G 16gb running custom firmware 3.1.2 I downloaded from here with baseband 5.11.07. I have WinXP Pro SP3.

I did google search and apparently I'm not the only one with this problem. Here is what I have found out to resolve the problem.

The best solution is if you already have a jailbroken iphone, all you have to do is go to cydia and add the source http://blackra1n.com/ and from there install blacksn0w. It should unlock your iphone just fine.

the second solution is more drastic. Only recommended if you decide to wipe your iphone. Just go to itunes and do a normal restore to official firmware. Once that is done, run Blackra1n RC3 and you should see the blackra1n app. Just run that and follow the instructions given above.

  • iLikeMyiPhone said:

Hi! That solution is for those who accidentally upgraded to 3.1.2 via iTunes or with new OTB iPhones with 5.11 baseband. If you ave 4.26 baseband, I would strongly suggest you preserve it and wait for Dev Team's solution and stay away from blackra1n WiFi issues…

Hey dude, i have a 2G iphone(Version 3.1.2(7D11)) and (Modem Firmware 04.05.04_G) and am using XP , which was jailbroken and unlocked with a custom firmware(activated). When i put my tmobile sim in, everything seems to work fine, only problem is that whenever i make a call to someone, they complain about hearing their voices back, i thought something was wrong with my sim but i tried different sims and kept getting the same problem and wherever i use another phone with the same sim, it works fine, i didnt have this problem before upgrading with the custome firmware…….. Therefore i was thinking of upgrading my baseband and firmware, with the firmware from itunes and then unlocking with your solution here or BootNeuter. Also please tell why it wouldnt be wise to upgrade to 5.11.07.
I just need that problem fixed, pleaaaase help me.
    Thanks in advance

  • iLikeMyiPhone said:

To start with : You have a 2G iPhone and its baseband is unlockable for ever! Apple stopped restricting it, which means it can be unlocked easily!

Regarding the echo issue : I returned my iPhones several times for replacement. It may possibly be a hardware issue. You are at the current latest baseband version. Only Apple may help with echo issue…

    Hi,
I have interested problem and really hope somebody can help me. I've been trying to solve for last 4 weeks. This is my first post. I have iphone 3gs 3.1.2 fw 05.11.07. I tried to unlock it numerous time using blacksn0w either from Mac or Cydia but it never works for me. Each time I put different wireless provider SIM card I get the error "diferent SIM detected – connect to itunes". I was able (using brand new SIM card) to connect (through total restore) to another provider (without using blacksn0) but I don't consider this success. Imagine someone traveling in Europe – each time one crosses the border one would have to do full restore with new SIM card. I would appreciate any comments how to fix this problem.
    Thx
    pchop
