iPhone 1.1.4 Downgrade – Quick Guide (MAC and Windows)
iPhone 1.1.4 upgrade hasn’t been a trouble-free update for many. There really is no good reason to update to 1.1.4 at this time, probably SDK might need it in the future. So, you accidentally upgraded to 1.1.4, now what? How do we get back to a much better firmware?
Download 1.1.3 / 1.1.2 firmwares from this link.
I have followed these steps on a 4.6 BL iPhone as well as 3.6 BL iPhone. If you have used IPSF like unlock before (Gunlokc/iJailbreak/ZiPhone), then you can still follow these steps.
- Your 1.1.4 iPhone should preferably be activated using iNdependence.(Latest version 1.4beta5) (Quit iTunes, iTunes Helper from Activity Monitor (Type Activity Monitor in Spotlight, you should see it).
- Now, the downgrade to 1.1.3 is pretty straightforward. Just hold the ‘Option’ key (MAC) / ‘Shift’ key (Windows) and hit the ‘Restore’ button on iTunes and browse for the .ipsw file you downloaded (preferably 1.1.3 firmware). And hit ‘Open‘.
- It should start downgrading. One of my friends got weird error messages at this point. Like ‘error 2001′ and some other error. You might want to restart your Mac and iPhone and proceed to Step 1. (Look for steps 4,5 for Windows users at the end of this post)
- (MAC) If you get an error message 1015 it is absolutely fine. That assures you have 1.1.3 now
All you have to do is launch iNdependence to kick the iPhone from the DFU mode. - (MAC) Now quit iTunes and iNdependence. Launch iJailbreak (Latest Version) and hit Unlock / Jailbreak depending on your requirement. If you are on ATT or an approved carrier, you may want to click Jailbreak or else Unlock is not a bad option either !!
iJailbreak installs installer.app by default (if you choose either Unlock or Jailbreak) and post a comment if you face any issues. You have a happy iPhone experience now!!
4. (Windows) It is common for error 1015 to pop up at this stage. It is time you download iBrickr. Quit iTunes and launch iBrickr. Click on ‘Boot the iPhone’. It should kick the iPhone out of DFU mode to boot into HomeScreen.
5. (Windows) Download ZiPhone. Now hit the ‘Do it all’ button if you never unlocked the iPhone. If you unlocked the iPhone before, you might want to hit ‘Jailbreak and Activate’ for installer.app to be glowing on your homescreen!

Hi Ashlee : I was referring to a Mac OS here. I meant to say that we need to quit iTunes to use iNdependence software (for Mac).
Activity Monitor displays all the current processes on your Mac. Open Activity Monitor to find iTunes Helper .. Quit iTunes helper and proceed using iNdependence.

hmmm…im sorry im real confused…u see im not very good with computers and i dont have a mac…i downloaded the firmware and i also downloaded the iNdependence and ijailbreak but now i dont know how to open them… can you please help? i tried opening the iNdependence but nothing happened and same with ijailbreak

Hi Deniz. No, once iBrickr kicks it out of the DFU (recovery) mode, you can directly use ZiPhone, no need of manual recovery again.

This really worked for me. I recently bought my i phone and as usual was experimenting with it- upgraded it to 1.1.4 from 1.1.3 and found out that many application working fine on 1.1.3 was not working on the latest firmware. tried to restore it back through i tune but no luck and then i followed the instructions as above and it worked wonders.

Jay, we cannot get installer.app on the iPhone without Jailbreaking it. Use ZiPhone/ijailbreak for installer.app …

I am afraid not! Jailbreak is a MUST to hack or unlock your iPhone!! Why are you so afraid of Jailbreak btb?? You can delete installer.app later though!!
To do that, you need openSSH installed. Then you can delete installer.app using an FTP client!

Well, at this stage, you have to run iBrickr. Remember the steps we did last night? Just launch iBrickr with iTunes closed…

I keep having the same problem, when i run iBrickr it runs the same process over and over again. The apple comes on but then it runs the code again. Then if I try locating it say iphone not found. I have to reboot phone and I can run ziphone to recover. Dont know why the ibrickr step does not work. Any ideas??? Thanks!!!

i have a 8Gb iPhone and just upgrade it to 1.1.4 from 1.1.2 with Ziphone… i aready had 4Gig inside the phone and lots of information from my work. after upgrading to 1.1.4 i couldn’t see my iPhone on iTunes and al the programs and songs anf files i had on my iPhone is not there. i can see i have 3Gig available but the iPod is e,pty and my mails and address book is empty too. its like its completely empty but still got 4Gig inside it. how can i solve this problem? please if theres a way to fix it, let me know..

@ Mando : First priority would be to restore using the latest version of iTunes and then use ZiPhone, iBrickr should only be used if the situation demands…
@ C!NA : You may try to restore, that will give you back all the disk space. Restore wipes the iPhone clean… Hope you have your data backed up!
@ Eric : I need to know if you are on Windows / Mac, and the firmware version you are on… Restore to 1.1.3 and then use ZiPhone, thats the best I can suggest with the current data you gave me…

i am running windows on my pc. I installed 1.1.4 and would like to downgrade to 1.1.3 or 1.1.2. I followed steps 1-3 and received the 1015 error. i then closed itunes and tried to launch ibrickr. When ibrickr comes up it say it is looking for my iphone but does not seem to locate it.
Restart your PC and try again, it should work.
i tried to restart with same result. I then went threw the whole process again. same result. any suggestions.
I am sure you might have worked it out by now, if not – you might want to restore it to 1.1.3 again and try the iBrickr…

Kiran Thanks, i did it and it worked… theres another problem i have is the EDGE. i installed the services on my 1.1.4 and disabled the EDGE but sometimes i can see the E icon is showing on the iPhone and i’ve been charged 68p for that.. it seams the services isnt working or i might did something wrong… did anybody have thesame problem?
hmmm, I guess you should disable EDGE by contacting your cellular provider, that is a fool proof way of doing it… services may work but edge icon shows as long as you have access, that’s my take!

Seriously, U R MY IDOL! Jeeze, soooo many times trying to do this crap and FINALLY, an actual effective method and very well explained… I bought my iPhone when it first came out, had it jailbroken when 1.1.1 was out, then I upgrade and obviously lost everything, and after the 1.1.2 my life/iphone wasnt the same anymore, I hate it the phone since I wasnt able to do whatever I wanted like before, I tried BILLIONS of times, I even messed up my iPhone many times trying to come up with the downgrade and successful jailbreak/unlock but nothing… THIS REALLY WORKS if u follow step by step and know what you are doing, now my iPhone looks AWESOME and of course its like mc donalds I AM LOVING IT! i have no .ipsw file…I am running on Mac OSX Leopard and it says under the “Downloads” window “iPhone 1,1_1.1.3_4A93_Restore.ipsw.zip
then after its done downloading it changes the file name to “iPhone 1,1_1″ and i cant open it under restore
Jake : Extract the zip file for the .ipsw to show up… (Right click on the file and extract..)
Now, hold the Alt/Option key on your mac and hit restore to select the .ipsw file …
kiran: i dont think you understand the problem…when it downloads it extracts into a folder with no .ipsw file….i downloaded ZiPhone and you can install .apps, but there are some that require 1.1.[123]

mikhail : You should have tried with the latest version of ZiPhone… I recommend iPlus though…. it works for sure….
when i download the firmwire from that link i try to select it from itunes and and there is no firmwire files…..
Download the firmware file to the Desktop and make sure the extension is .ipsw If it is in .Zip format, extract them to .ipsw and then browse from iTunes using Shift/Option key…

iNdependence states that my phone is in a FactoryActivated state..what does that mean?

iPlus on 1.1.4 did not work for me either, everything finished. I got to the last step, however, it never rebooted, so i rebooted it myself, and there was no installer app.

Hi, this issue has already been mentionned but no clear answer. Sorry to asking again. i can’t find the .ipsw file on OSX!!! => i have dowloaded the 1.1.3 firmware => the .zip is automatically unzipped and display a file named 1,1_1 with 2 image disks. which file should I use???

sorry… solved. I just had to right click on it and download on my desktop. Then go to itunes and select the ZIP file (do not unzip) qnd it works just fine.

Well, I don’t understand why you want to downgrade in the first place… next, go through the regular iTunes activation but give your previous activation details… not new ones…
In your directions to downgrade too 1.1.3 it says to use brikr if you get an error message (1015) which I did. It also says to “Boot iPhone” using ibrikr. I couldn’t find this command. So, I was wondering if you knew where it was?

I’m sry not downgrade but jailbreak it so i can basicly get ring tones easier without it overwriting and making dups,as long as I don’t have to go thorugh the plan activation again for AT&T
If you have a Mac, you can get ringtones for free but if Windows, I guess you might want to jailbreak

Hi kiran, im fazlee. i just bought my 8g iphone 1.13 otb (i think so??) three weeks ago. all the jailbreaking and unlocking was done by the guy in my locap phone shop here. Anyway, Ive been using it everyday and it works perfectly until early this morning after i update one tweek from iclarified (Region Format Patch 1.1.3), my phone jammed. so i reset the phone and it wont turn on again… all i can see is the apple logo and it keeps on blinking every 2-3 minutes.. please help me sir!!!! should i restore it? what should i do…. i just need my phone works……

Restored phone to 1.1.4 using iTunes, Unlocked iPhone using iPlus, upon completion everything worked except YouTube.
Tried various senerios described above but finally found a procedure that works (now on three different phones)
Here you go:
Sync iPhone to be sure you have good backup of data
Take SIM out of phone
Put iPhone into Restore mode and restore firmware using iTunes
When restore is complete, Close iTunes and Quit iTuneshelper and iTunes in ActivityMonitor
Leave SIM out of iPhone and unlock iPhone with iPlus following the procedure
When iPlus is complete, re-install SIM
iPhone is completely unlocked and all applications (including YouTube) function perfectly.
Fazlee : All you have to do is restore your iPhone to 1.1.4 and use iPlus from downloads section : http://ilikemyiphone.com/?page_id=173 unlock/jailbreak or whatever you need! Don’t worry about the bootloader buddy, it will be taken care of!
IF I WANT INSTALLER APP TO WORK WAT DO I DO BECAUSE WHEN I WANT TO DOWNLOAD SOMETHING IT TELLS ME IN NEED FIRMWARE 1.0.2 SHOULD I DO THE SAME THING AS U DID TO DOWNGRADE TO 1.0.2?
I suggest you restore it to 1.1.4 and then use iPlus

Hi Kiran, i followed the iplus guide and jailbroke my 1.1.4otb 16gb iphone. Youtube wasnt working but i went installer and downloaded the youtube tweek and its all good. The phone function is not working though, do i need to tell the phone what country i am in or something, is there an iworld tweek for 1.1.4? How do i get my sim to work?

Hey all, thought I would share my story (caution it’s fairly long) …
I had a fully functional 1.1.2 iPhone using StealthSim to unlock. I attempted to upgrade to 1.1.3 using the Installer.app’s Official Upgrader 1.1.2-1.1.3. It didn’t work very well as it was locked and I was left with the Connect to Itunes screen. I wish I had done more research before continuing as I probably could’ve unlocked it with Ziphone or similar but… I forced a restore back to 1.1.2 following some instructions on the web which included instructions to use a Baseband Downgrader from i.unlock.no that failed miserably, Main Script error leaving the phone with no modem firmware which gave me a brick that I couldn’t get to restore 1.1.1, 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 – the errors I received in Itunes were 1002, 1011, and 1012 respectively. Lots of horror stories about those on the web…
So at this point I was 9 hours in and panicking big time… I finally discovered Ziphone and it’s promise to unlock/Jailbreak 1.1.4. So I used Itunes to install 1.1.4 firmware and that worked (progress – good thing), then I used Ziphone to jailbreak the phone (more success) – feeling much better.
Here’s my question – Now that I have a functional unit with 1.1.4 on it but the phone part isn’t working with my SteathSim – I’m thinking about using your process to downgrade and see if 1.1.3 works with my StealthSim (my wife has a TurboSim that works with 1.1.3) – should I do this or just use Ziphone to unlock and stay at 1.1.4? Any suggestions? Sure do want the phone to work…

I just used iBrickr and the phone is now just cycling through the black screen with an apple, then it runs all kinds of code on a black screen with white letters. Too fast to read anything. Then it goes black, then back to the screen with the apple. I can’t turn it off and I can’t stop it. Now what?
OK, I finally got it to stop, but now iBrickr can’t see the phone. Every time I turn the phone back on, it starts the cycle again. Is the phone toast?

I can’t restore because when I turn the phone on all I get is the scrolling code. i have to hold both the power button and home button to get it to stop.
OK, I finally got iTunes to see the phone and that interupted the scrolling code. BTW it was informatoin about Darwin, build date …..
If I just use iLiberty will that work for just unlocking the phone? I can’t seem to download ZiPhone. I am in China right now and every site that has ZiPhone seems to be down (or blocked?)
Well, iLiberty+ should work just fine. Restore and use iLiberty+ : as simple as that
If using a mac just go to get info and change extension manually
so if i wana downgrade to 1.1.3 i click on 1.1.3
or do i click on 1.1.4 which i already have ?
hey kiran, i was reading up on posts through google and came across this one. you seem to know a good amount about downgrading. so heres my story. my phone recently messed up with some apps i had. i had app taps on it. and i believe i was still on 1.1.1 . i loved being able to put whatever i wanted on there, on top of ringtones and stuff so i never upgraded. but i couldn’t do anything with my phone at one point because my phone somehow messed itself up. so i was wondering, do you have any instructions on downgrading back to 1.1.1? i got my phone back up ato 1.1.4. glad to have my phone working. but hating what its left me with. please help. greatly appreciated.
It is strongly suggested you not go back to 1.1.1… 1.1.4 is the most stable and compatible OS for all apps …
hmm.. really? i dunno. i’ll try it out i guess.. but if i can’t put my ringtones back on we’ll have a serious problem here. ;[ i’ll let you know what happens. thanks for the feedback.

Hi, I have the iphone 1.1.4 8gb.
I unlocked with zibri and tried to correct the wi-fi.
I still have no access to my gmail or safari on this phone. but the bigger problem is that i can only hear on speaker. otherwise it’s whisper quiet.
I have not seen any posts about these problems, and I have no idea what to do to fix it. I thought downgrading to 1.1.1 would be the solution, but I am not sure how to do that, or if it’s a good idea. mixed posts about that.
please help!

Thank you for calling. If you’re up, I am too, don’t know how i missed your call.
i did try to downgrade to 1.1.4 but itunes said i was not successful. this is after i put it in DFU mode with iDemocracy. Then i tried to command option click restore and go through the files in the 1.1.1 firmware download from your site, which was weird, and disappeared, but in the end, just quit itunes and kept me in DFU mode. then i tried to restart the iphone by pressing both buttons at the same time, i did this twice, and suddenly it worked again, with 1.1.4 on it, and might i add the rest of my media and phone numbers still on it. agian, unexpected. i thought it would all be wiped out.
so, now, i got your message, I have finally successfully figured out how to download iplus, took a while. it all went smoothly after a while, but it’s been stuck on this line :
Loading iplus.dat.
ppc
Searching for iPhone…
Entering recovery mode.
and nothing is happening for 15 min. then the screen went black, the apple showed up, and then the plug+itunes logo came back.
confused.
i guess try iliberty now?

For those wondering what finally worked in Danna’s case is : Many iPhone users including me freaked out when the volume was too low on the call whereas speaker phone works great. The problem lies in the protective cover that comes slapped on all the iPhone. Just take it off and you are good to go!

hi i have wifi problems on my iphone..i couldn’t tap on the menu since it in grey-mode..i already downgrade to firmware 1.1.3 but it did’t work on my devices.could u give any suggesstion on it bcoz i have try many ways to fix it…thanks a lot
there is only one speaker on the iphone
I am not sure why you would want to go back to 1.1.4 since 2.2.1 ismore stable and readily unlockable for iPhone 2G…
